Directory (People)
What is the directory content type?
The directory can be used to create a profile page for an individual, or for creating directories of people for your department, role, etc. Your directory can be used in conjunction with categories or groups to organize the people displayed on your site.
How to add a directory post:
- On the top admin bar, navigate to New > Directory. Note, this will take you to a “Classic” editor screen as opposed to the block editor.
- Enter in your profile title where it says Add Title. This is typically the full name of the person.
- In the main body content area of the page, enter the person’s bio.
- Under Entry Details, fill out the following fields for the person’s profile, where applicable:
- First, Middle and Last name: Last name will mainly be used for sort ordering in lists
- Title (1 – 3): There are three fields for professional titles or affiliations.
- Email and Phone: Optional contact information to display on the profile or in list views
- Under Excerpt, write a short teaser description for the person that will appear in list views.
- In the right sidebar, review additional configuration settings:
- Categories and Groups: see Managing Categories & Tags for a review of how to use categories. Groups work in the same way as categories–it provides you additional options for organizing your directories.
- Featured image: Add a headshot for the person’s profile. This is the thumbnail image that will appear in list views and on the directory profile.
- Preview and Publish your post once you’ve added your content.
How to add a directory list
Directory block
The Directory block will be used in most cases, as it will dynamically pull in a list of your people profiles typically ordered by last name.
- In the edit view of the page you want the list on, add a new block called Directory.
- Make sure the block you just added is selected and adjust the block settings in the right sidebar:
- Categories and Groups: If you would like to filter down the list to a specific subset of people (e.g., a list only showing Faculty), select the appropriate categories or groups in the dropdown menus
- Choose filters to display: Check off the boxes if you would like site visitors to be able to search the list and/or use filters for the categories and groups you have set up to narrow down the directory.
- Choose fields to display: Select which directory fields you would like displayed in the list view
- Sort by: Select how you want the list sorted. We recommend sorting by Last name.
- Filters logic: Select if you would like to use AND or OR logic when site visitors select more than one filter
- Enable “load more” button: Toggling on the “load more” button will create a button to load more entries if the full list is not display. This is helpful for long lists.
- Entries per page: The number you select here will turn on the “load more” button after the selected number of entries are shown.
- Columns: Select the number of columns you would like in the layout for the list.
- You should see a preview in the block editor of which profiles are pulling in and how they will be displayed.
Directory entries block
Use the Directory Entries block when you would like to pull in a manually curated list of people profiles.
- In the edit view of the page you want the list on, add a new block called Directory entries.
- Make sure the block you just added is selected and adjust the block settings in the right sidebar:
- Entries: search for and select a particular profile or set of profiles you would like to add to the list
- Fields: Toggle on and off which fields you would like to display in the list
- Columns: Select the number of columns you would like in the layout for the list.
- You should see a preview in the block editor of which profiles are pulling in and how they will be displayed.
