Adding content to menus

Menu types

You have access to three menus in WordPress: the main menu, utility menu and the footer menu. Each one of these menus can be edited to have their own individual links to pages.

  • Main Menu: This is the main navigation bar that shows up at the top of each page of your website. You have the option for dropdown menu items
  • Utility Menu: This menu appears below the search menu on the top right side of the screen. This is optional. You do not need to add links to this menu if they are unnecessary.
  • Footer Menu: These are the navigation links that show at the very bottom of your website. If desired, you can use the same menu options from your main menu navigation for the footer navigation as well. You can also use the footer menu for a few quick links.

Navigating and selecting menus

Before adding and editing content in your menus, you will need to navigate to the area on your site to administer the menu(s) you want to edit

  1. In the Dashboard left sidebar, navigate to Appearance > Menus.
  2. On the Select a menu to edit dropdown, select either the Main navigation, the Footer, or the Utility menu, then click Select.
  3. Now you are able to edit and content in that menu.

Note: This is the most streamlined way of editing your menus, and is the screen that the rest of the page references. However there is a second way to edit menus and perform the same actions under under Appearance > Customize > Menus.

Editing your menus

  1. Under Menu structure, select the menu item that you want to edit by opening its panel. If it is a custom link you will have the ability to change the link URL and the label. If it is a page on the website, you will have the option to change the label only.
  2. Optionally move the menu item by dragging and dropping. Menu items that are indented will be dropdown menu items. Do not go past the second level menu items, as third level menu items will not work.
  3. Once your changes have been made, click on Save Menu in the bottom left. When you view the site, you should now see your menu changes reflected

Adding new menu links

  1. Under Add menu items on the left, choose which type of content you would like to add to your menu. It could be a new page you created, a post or even custom external links
    • To add a page or post, check the items you want to add, then select Add To Menu
    • To add a custom link, click on custom links and add a URL and link text for that particular link, then select Add To Menu.
  2. Optionally drag and drop to reorder and nest menu items.
  3. Click on Save Menu in the bottom left. When you view the site, you should now see your menu changes reflected
