Adding a new block
How to add a new block
There are multiple ways to add a new block to pages or posts on your site. First, you will need to navigate to the page edit screen in order to access the block editor for that page, by creating new content or editing an existing page.
Approach 1: Use the / keyboard shortcut
- Type a forward slash in the block editor where it says Type / to choose a block. Note that this default block is the Paragraph block.
- A menu will appear with all of the block types available. Start typing in one of the block types available to you.
- Select the block type you desire by clicking on it or hitting Enter.
Approach 2: Use the block inserter icon in the top toolbar
- Select with your cursor where on the page you would like to insert the block.
- Use the plus sign in the top left corner of your screen to toggle the Block Inserter.
- Select the block type you would like to add to the page.
Approach 3: Use the block Inserter icon to the right of an empty block
- Select an empty block on the page editor
- This will open up a modal window with a list of most frequently used blocks.
- Search for and select the block type you would like to add to the page.
Approach 4: Use the block options menu
- Select an already existing block on the page
- Click on the three vertical dots on the toolbar above the block or in the List View of that block
- You’ll see a few options for creating a new block:
- Copy: allows you to copy the block, so that you can then paste it on another page or other part of the page
- Duplicate: allows you to make a copy of that same block with all the same content and settings right below the block you’ve selected
- Add before and Add after: allows you to insert a block directly before or after the selected bloc
Once a block has been inserted on the page, fill out the fields and configure the block settings particular to that block type.
